এই রাজা আসে ওই রাজা যায়
জামা কাপড়ের রং বদলায়….
দিন বদলায় না!

গোটা পৃথিবীকে গিলে খেতে চায় সে-ই
যে ন্যাংটো ছেলেটা
কুকুরের সাথে ভাত নিয়ে তার লড়াইচলছে,
চলবে |

পেটের ভিতর কবে যে আগুন
জ্বলেছে এখনো জ্বলবে!

রাজা আসে যায় আসে আর যায়
শুধু পোষাকের রং বদলায়
শুধু মুখোশের ঢং বদলায়
পাগলা মেহের আলি
দুই হাতে দিয়ে তালি
এই রাস্তায়, ওই রাস্তায়
এই নাচে ওই গান গায় :
“সব ঝুট হায়! সব ঝুট হায়! সব ঝুট হায়!
সব ঝুট হায়!”
জননী জন্মভূমি!

সব দেখে সব শুনেও অন্ধ তুমি!
সব জেনে সব বুঝেও বধির তুমি!

কবে যে হয়েছে মেহের আলি,
কুকুরের ভাত কেড়ে খায়

তোমায় আমি দেখেছিলাম ব’লে
তুমি আমার পদ্মপাতা হলে;
শিশির কণার মতন শূন্যে ঘুরে
শুনেছিলাম পদ্মপত্র আছে অনেক দূরে
খুঁজে খুঁজে পেলাম তাকে শেষে।

নদী সাগর কোথায় চলে ব’য়ে
পদ্মপাতায় জলের বিন্দু হ’য়ে
জানি না কিছু-দেখি না কিছু আর
এতদিনে মিল হয়েছে তোমার আমার
পদ্মপাতার বুকের ভিতর এসে।

তোমায় ভালোবেসেছি আমি, তাই
শিশির হয়ে থাকতে যে ভয় পাই,
তোমার কোলে জলের বিন্দু পেতে
চাই যে তোমার মধ্যে মিশে যেতে
শরীর যেমন মনের সঙ্গে মেশে।

জানি আমি তুমি রবে-আমার হবে ক্ষয়
পদ্মপাতা একটি শুধু জলের বিন্দু নয়।

তা তাকাতেই ফুরিয়ে যায় রে পদ্মপাতার জল

একটি প্রজাপতি,
দঃসাহসে বসলো এসে
আলোর মুখোমুখি;
চিত্রিত নয় কালো রঙের
পাখনা দু'টি মেলে।

দেয়াল জুড়ে লাগল তার
ঘরে ফেরার কাঁপন,
প্রাণের মাছে ফিরল বুঝি
চিরকালের আপন।

ভালোবাসার অর্ঘ্য দিয়ে
মৃত্যুখানি কেনা,
শেষ করেছি প্রথম দিনে
হয়নি শুধু চেনা!

চোখের পাশে দেয়ালটিতে
বসলে তুমি যেই,
হঠাৎ-চেনা পাখার রেণু
আঙ্গুল ভরে নেই।

এমন করে পরের ঘরে
দেয়ালে কেউ বসে?
হঠাৎ যদি ভালোবাসার

দুরভিসন্ধির খেলা শেষ হয়ে কোনোদিন
দিন যদি আসে,
এই দেশে ভালোবেসে বলবে মানুষ,
অনন্বিত অসন্তোষ অজারকতার কালে এসে
লাবন্যের লকলকে লতা এক খুব কায়ক্লেশে
একদিন তুলেছিলো বিনয়াবনত মাথা
এতোটুকু ছিলো না দীনতা।

অকুলীন এই দিন শেষ হয়ে কোনোদিন
দিন যদি আসে,
শুভ্রতায় স্নিগ্ধতায় সমুজ্জল মানুষ এদেশে
বলবে সূর্যের দিকে ছিলো সেই লতাটির মুখ
বলবে মাটির সাথে ছিলো তার গাঢ় যোগাযোগ,
কিছু অক্সিজেন সেও দিয়েছিলো
নিয়েছিলো বিষ
বলবে পুষ্পিত কিছু করেছিলো ধূসর কার্নিশ।

ভালোবাসাবাসিহীন এই দিন সব নয়– শেষ নয়
আরো দিন আছে,
ততো বেশি দূরে নয়
বারান্দার মতো ঠিক দরোজার কাছে।

গতকাল একদিন - নির্মলেন্দু গুণ

গতকাল বড়ো ছেলেবেলা ছিল
আমাদের চারিধারে,
দেয়ালের মতো অনুভূতিমাখা মোম
জ্বালিয়ে জ্বালিয়ে আমরা দেখেছি
শিখার ভিতরে মুখ ।
গতকাল ছিল জীবনের কিছু
মরণের মতো সুখ ।

গতকাল বড়ো যৌবন ছিল
শরীরে শরীর ঢালা,
ফুলের বাগান ঢেকে রেখেছিল
উদাসীন গাছপালা ।

আমরা দু’জনে মাটি খুঁড়ে-খুঁড়ে
লুকিয়েছিলাম প্রেম,
গতকাল বড় ছেলেবেলা ছিল
বুঝিনি কী হারালাম !

গতকাল বড়ো এলোমেলো চুলে
বাতাস তুলেছে গ্রিবা,
চুমু খেয়ে গেছে কৃষ্ণচূড়ার
উজ্জ্বল মধুরিমা ।

গতকাল বড়ো মুখোমুখি ছিল
সারাজীবনের চাওয়া,
চোখের নিমিষে চোখের ভিতরে
চোখের বাহিরে যাওয়া ।

অদ্ভুত আঁধার এক এসেছে এ পৃথিবীতে আজ,
যারা অন্ধ সবচেয়ে বেশী আজ চোখে দেখে তারা;
যাদের হৃদয়ে কোনো প্রেম নেই, প্রীতি নেই, করুণার আলোড়ন নেই
পৃথিবী অচল আজ তাদের সুপরামর্শ ছাড়া।

যাদের গভীর আস্থা আছে আজও মানুষের প্রতি,
এখনও যাদের কাছে স্বাভাবিক বলে মনে হয়
মহৎ সত্য বা রীতি, কিংবা শিল্প অথবা সাধনা
শকুন ও শেয়ালের খাদ্য আজ তাহাদের হৃদয়।

শোনা গেল লাশকাটা ঘরে
নিয়ে গেছে তারে;
কাল রাতে - ফাল্গুনের রাতের আধাঁরে

যখন গিয়েছে ডুবে পঞ্চমীর চাঁদ
মরিবার হল তার সাধ। বধূ শুয়ে ছিল পাশে - শিশুটিও ছিল;
প্রেম ছিল,আশা ছিল-জোৎসনায়,-তবে সে দেখিল
কোন ভূত? ঘুম কেন ভেঙে গেলো তার?
অথবা হয়নি ঘুম বহুকাল - লাশকাটা ঘরে শুয়ে ঘুমায় এবার।
এই ঘুম চেয়েছিলো বুঝি!

রক্তফেনা-মাখা মুখে মড়কের ইদুঁরের মত ঘাড় গুজি
আধার ঘুজির বুকে ঘুমায় এবার;
কোনোদিন জাগিবেনা আর।

কোনোদিন জাগিবেনা আর।
জাগিবার গাঢ় বেদনার
অবিরাম - অবিরাম ভার
সহিবেনা আর -
এই কথা বলেছিলো তারে
চাঁদডুবে চ’লে গেলে - অদ্ভুদ আঁধারে
যেন তার জানালার ধারে
উটের গ্রীবার মতো কোন এক নিস্তব্ধতা এসে।

তবুও পেঁচা জাগে;
গলিত স্থবির ব্যাঙ আরো দুই মুহূর্তের ভিক্ষা মাগে।
আরেকটি প্রভাতের ইশারায় - অনুমেয় উষ্ণ অনুরাগে
টের পাই যুথচারী আঁধারের গাঢ় নিরুদ্দেশে
চারদিকে মশারির ক্ষমাহীন বিরুদ্ধতা
মশা তার অন্ধকার সংগ্রামে জেগে থেকে জীবনের স্রোত ভালোবাসে

রক্ত ক্লেদ বসা থেকে রোদ্রে ফের উড়ে যায় মাছি;
সোনালি রোদের ঢেউয়ে উড়ন্ত কীটের খেলা কতো দেখিয়াছি।
ঘনিষ্ঠ আকাশ যেন - যেন কোন বির্কীন জীবন
অধিকার ক’রে আছে ইহাদের মন;
চাঁদ ডুবে গেলে পর প্রধান আঁধারে তুমি অশ্বথের কাছে
একগাছা দড়ি হাতে গিয়েছিলে তবু একা - একা,
যে জীবন ফড়িঙের,দোয়েলের-মানুষের সাথে তার হয়নাকো দেখা
এই জেনে।

অশ্বথের শাখা
করেনি কি প্রতিবাদ ? জোনাকির ভিড় এসে
সোনালী ফুলের স্নিগ্ধ ঝাঁকে
করেনি কি মাখামাখি?
থুরথুরে অন্ধ পেঁচা এসে
বলেনি কি; ‘বুড়ি চাঁদ গেছে বুঝি বেনোজলে ভেসে
চমৎকার !
ধরা যাক দু-একটা ইঁদুর এবার!’
জানায়নি পেঁচা এসে এ-তুমুল গাড় সমাচার ?

জীবনের এই স্বাদ-সুপক্ক যবের ঘ্রান হেমন্তের বিকেলের-
তোমার অসহ্য বোধ হ’লো;
মর্গে কি হৃদয় জুড়ালো
মর্গে - গুমোটে-
থ্যাঁতা ইঁদুরের মতো রক্তমাখা ঠোঁটে।
শোনো
তবু এ মৃতের গল্প; কোনো
নারীর প্রণয়ে ব্যর্থ হয় নাই;
বিবাহিত জীবনের সাধ
কোথাও রাখেনি কোন খাদ,
সময়ের উদ্বর্তনে উঠে এসে বধু
মধু-আর মননের মধু
দিয়েছে জানিতে;
হাড়হাবাতের গ্লানি বেদনার শীতে
এ-জীবন কোনদিন কেঁপে ওঠে নাই;
তাই
লাশকাটা ঘরে
চিৎ হ'য়ে শুয়ে আছে টেবিলের পরে।

জানি - তবু জানি
নারীর হৃদয়-প্রেম-শিশু-গৃহ-নয় সবখানি;
অর্থ নয়, কীর্তি নয়, সচ্ছলতা নয় -
আর এক বিপন্ন বিষ্ময়
আমাদের অন্তর্গত রক্তের ভিতরে
খেলা করে;
আমাদের ক্লান্ত করে,
ক্লান্ত - ক্লান্ত করে;
লাশকাটা ঘরে
সেই ক্লান্তি নাই;
তাই
লাশকাটা ঘরে
চিৎ হ'য়ে শুয়ে আছে টেবিলের পরে।

তবু রোজ রাতে আমি চেয়ে দেখি,আহা,
থুরথুরে অন্ধ পেঁচা অশ্বত্থের ডালে বসে এসে,
চোখ পাল্টায়ে কয়: ‘বুড়ি চাঁদ গেছে বুঝি বেনোজলে ভেসে ?’
চমৎকার !
ধরা যাক দু-একটা ইঁদুর এবার-

হে প্রগাঢ় পিতামহী,আজো চমৎকার ?
আমিও তোমার মতো বুড়ো হবো-বুড়ি চাঁদটারে আমি
ক’রে দিবো কালীদহে বেনোজলে পার;
আমরা দুজনে মিলে শূন্য ক’রে চ’লে যাবো জীবনের প্রচুর ভাঁড়ার।

বনলতা সেন।

কোথায় গিয়েছ তুমি আজ এই বেলা
মাছরাঙা ভোলেনি তো দুপুরের খেলা
শালিখ করে না তার নীড় অবহেলা
উচ্ছ্বাসে নদীর ঢেউ হয়েছে সফেন,
তুমি নাই বনলতা সেন।

তোমার মতন কেউ ছিল কি কোথাও?
কেন যে সবের আগে তুমি চলে যাও।
কেন যে সবের আগে তুমি
পৃথিবীকে করে গেলে শূন্য মরুভূমি

ছিঁড়ে গেলে কুহকের ঝিলমিল টানা ও পোড়েন,

কত যে আসবে সন্ধ্যা প্রান্তরে আকাশে,

সোনালী ডানার শঙ্খচিল - জীবনানন্দ দাশ

মনে পড়ে সেই কলকাতা–সেই তেরোশো তিরিশ–
বস্তির মতো ঘর,
বৌবাজারের মোড়ে দিনমান
ট্রাম করে ঘরঘর।
আমাদের কিছু ছিল না তখন
ছিল শুধু যৌবন,
সাগরের মতো বেগুনি আকাশে
সোনালি চিলের মন।

ছেঁড়া শাড়ি পরে কাটাইতে দিন
বাঁটনা হলুদ মাখা
বিভারানী বোস, তোমার দু হাতে
ছিল দুটো শাদা শাঁখা,
শাদা শাঁখা শুধু তোমার দু হাতে
জুটিত না তেল চুলে,
তবুও আমরা দিতাম আকাশে
বকের পাখনা তুলে।

জুটিত না কালি কলমে আমার
কাগজে পড়িত টান,
তোমার বইয়ের মার্জিনে, বিভা,
লিখিতাম আমি গান।
পাশের বাড়ির পোড়া কাঠ এনে
দেয়ালে আঁকিতে ছবি।
আমি বলিতাম–’অবন্তী-বিভা’,
তুমি শুধাইতে ‘ঈগল কবি’

চক্ষে তোমার মিঙ্ যুগ ভাসে
কাঙড়ার ছবি ঐ নীল চোখে
আমার হৃদয়ে অনুরাধাপুর
পুরানো ফরাসি গানের বোকে
সেদিন আমার পথে পথে হাঁটা
সেও তম্বুরা মান্ডলিন
তোমার সেদিন ঘর সিঁড়ি ভাঙা
বাংলার পট, পুরোনো চীন।

পৃথিবীর মুখে তুড়ি দিয়ে দিয়ে
দুইটি হৃদয় সেই
ডাল তেল নুন জোটে না যাদের
জামা-শাড়ি কিছু নেই,
তবুও আকাশ জয়ের বাসনা
দু:খের গুলি সে যেন ঢিল,
আমরা দুজনে বেগুনি আকাশে
সোনালি ডানার শঙ্খচিল—

শরীরের ক্ষুধা মাটির মতন
স্বপ্ন তখন সোনার সিঁড়ি,
মানুষ থাকুক সংসারে পড়ে
আমরা উড়িব পৃথিবী ছিঁড়ি।

সকাল হয়েছে: চাল নাই ঘরে,
সন্ধা হয়েছে: প্রদীপ নাই,
আমার কবিতা কেউ কেনে নাকো?
তোমার ছবিও ঘুঁটের ছাই?

ছ মাসের ভাড়া পড়ে আছে না কি?
ঘরে নাই তবু চাল কড়ি নুন?
আকাশের নীল পথে পথে তবু
আমার হৃদয় আত্তিলা হূণ
আকাশর নীল পথ থেকে পথে
জানালার পর জানালা খুলে
ভোরের মুনিয়াপাখির মতন
কোথায় যে দিতে পাখনা তুলে।

সংসার আজ শিকার করেছে
সোনালি চিলেরা হল শিকার,
আজ আমি আর কবিতা লিখি না
তুমিও তো ছবি আঁকো না আর।
তবুও শীতের শেষে ফাল্গুনে
মাতাল যখন সোনাল বন
তেরোশো তিরিশ—দারিদ্র সেই
ফিরে চাই আজ সে যৌবন।

ফিরে চাই আমি তোমারে আবার
আমার কবিতা, তোমার ছবি—
শুধাতাম আমি ‘অনুরাধাপুর’—
শুধাইতে তুমি ‘শকুন কবি’।
সেই-যে আকাশ খোঁজার স্বপ্ন
দুখের ছররা—সে যেন ঢিল,
আমরা দুজনে বেগুনি আকাশে
সোনালি ডানার শঙ্খচিল।

বর্ষা বৃষ্টি কিংবা ভালোবাসার কবিতা - মহাদেব সাহা

এই একখন্ড সাদা কাগজের উপর মেঘ এসে যখন দাঁড়ায়
তখন প্রতিটি অক্ষর হয়ে ওঠে একেকটি বৃষ্টির ফোঁটা,
শব্দগুলি বর্ষাকাল
গুঁড়ি গুঁড়ি বৃষ্টি বিন্দু বিন্দু অশ্রুর কবিতা।

মেঘ ভাঙতে ভাঙতে দক্ষিণ গোলার্ধ থেকে
উত্তর গোলার্ধে যায়।
সাদা কাগজের উপর পড়ে থাকে স্মৃতি,
ভালোবাসার গন্ধ
আমি হাত বাড়িয়ে সেই মেঘবৃষ্টির স্বর্ণমুদ্রা কুড়াতে থাকি,
এই শাদা কাগজ মূহুর্তে হয়ে ওঠে বিরহী মেঘদুত
অথই গীতবিতান।

কাগজ আবিষ্কারের পূর্বে মানুষ প্রেমের কবিতা
লিখে রেখেছে আকাশে
সেই ভালোবাসার কবিতা এই বৃষ্টি,
এই ভরা বর্ষা।

ছেলেবেলায় এক বোষ্টুমী তার আগমনী গান হঠাৎ থামিয়ে বলেছিল
শুক্লা দ্বাদশীর দিন অন্তরাটুকু শুনিয়ে যাবে
তারপর কত চন্দ্রভূক অমাবস্যা চলে গেলো, কিন্তু সেই বোষ্টুমী
আর এলোনা
পঁচিশ বছর প্রতিক্ষায় আছি।

মামা বাড়ির মাঝি নাদের আলী বলেছিল, বড় হও দাদাঠাকুর
তোমাকে আমি তিন প্রহরের বিল দেখাতে নিয়ে যাবো
সেখানে পদ্মফুলের মাথায় সাপ আর ভ্রমর

খেলাঘর - নির্মলেন্দু গুণ

শিশুরা খেলাঘর করে ।
তারা হাঁড়ি-পাতিল, বাসন-কোসন নিয়ে
বড়দের মতো সংসার সংসার খেলে ।
তারপর একসময় ক্লান্ত হয়ে ঘুমিয়ে পড়ে
ঘুমভাঙ্গার পর শুরু হয় তাদের অন্যখেলা ।
এক্কা-দোক্কা, গোল্লাছুট কিংবা
কানামাছি ভোঁ ভোঁ !

বড়োরাও খেলাঘর করে ।
তাদের বাসন-কোসনগুলো আকৃতিতে বড়ো,
তাদের কামনা বাসনার মতো ।
তারা তাদের খেলাঘরের নাম রাখে সংসার ।
শিশুদের মতো তারাও ক্লান্ত হয় ,
তারাও সংসার ভাঙ্গে, কিন্তু শিশুদের মতো
তারা ঘুমুতে পারে না ।

আমি হয়তো মানুষ নই, মানুষগুলো অন্যরকম,
হাঁটতে পারে, বসতে পারে, এ-ঘর থেকে ও-ঘরে যায়,
মানুষগুলো অন্যরকম, সাপে কাটলে দৌড়ে পালায় ।

আমি হয়তো মানুষ নই, সারাটা দিন দাঁড়িয়ে থাকি,
গাছের মতো দাঁড়িয়ে থাকি।
সাপে কাটলে টের পাই না, সিনেমা দেখে গান গাই না,
অনেকদিন বরফমাখা জল খাই না ।
কী করে তাও বেঁচে থাকছি, ছবি আঁকছি,
সকালবেলা, দুপুরবেলা অবাক করে
সারাটা দিন বেঁচেই আছি আমার মতে । অবাক লাগে ।

আমি হয়তো মানুষ নই, মানুষ হলে জুতো থাকতো,
বাড়ি থাকতো, ঘর থাকতো,
রাত্রিবেলায় ঘরের মধ্যে নারী থাকতো,
পেটের পটে আমার কালো শিশু আঁকতো ।

আমি হয়তো মানুষ নই,
মানুষ হলে আকাশ দেখে হাসবো কেন ?
মানুষগুলো অন্যরকম, হাত থাকবে,
নাক থাকবে, তোমার মতো চোখ থাকবে,
নিকেলমাখা কী সুন্দর চোখ থাকবে
ভালোবাসার কথা দিলেই কথা রাখবে ।

মানুষ হলে উরুর মধ্যে দাগ থাকতো ,
বাবা থাকতো, বোন থাকতো,
ভালোবাসার লোক থাকতো,
হঠাৎ করে মরে যাবার ভয় থাকতো ।

আমি হয়তো মানুষ নই,
মানুষ হলে তোমাকে নিয়ে কবিতা লেখা
আর হতো না, তোমাকে ছাড়া সারাটা রাত
বেঁচে থাকাটা আর হতো না ।

মানুষগুলো সাপে কাটলে দৌড়ে পালায় ;
অথচ আমি সাপ দেখলে এগিয়ে যাই,
অবহেলায় মানুষ ভেবে জাপটে ধরি ।

একটু দাঁড়াও আমি তৈরী হয়ে নিই ।

তেমার জন্মান্ধ চোখে শুধু ভুল অন্ধকার । ওটা নয়, ওটা চুল ।
এই হলো আমার আঙ্গুল, এইবার স্পর্শ করো,--না, না, না,
-ওটা নয়, ওটা কন্ঠনালী, গরলবিশ্বাসী এক শিল্পীর
মাটির ভাস্কর্য, ওটা অগ্নি নয়, অই আমি--আমার যৌবন ।

সুখের সামান্য নিচে কেটে ফেলা যন্ত্রণার কবন্ধ--প্রেমিক,
ওখানে কী খোঁজ তুমি ? ওটা কিছু নয়, ওটা দুঃখ ;
রমণীর ভালোবাসা না-পাওয়ার চিহ্ন বুকে নিয়ে ওটা নদী,
নীল হয়ে জমে আছে ঘাসে,--এর ঠিক ডানপাশে , অইখানে
হাত দাও, হ্যাঁ, ওটা বুক, অইখানে হাত রাখো, ওটাই হৃদয় ।

অইখানে থাকে প্রেম, থাকে স্মৃতি, থাকে সুখ, প্রেমের সিম্পনি ;

সেখানে সংসারী থাকে, সংসার বিরাগী থাকে,
কেউ আসে রাজপথে সাজাতে সংসার ।
কেউ আসে জ্বালিয়ে বা জ্বালাতে সংসার
শাশ্বত শান্তির যারা তারাও যুদ্ধে আসে
অবশ্য আসতে হয় মাঝে মধ্যে
অস্তিত্বের প্রগাঢ় আহ্বানে,
কেউ আবার যুদ্ধবাজ হয়ে যায় মোহরের প্রিয় প্রলোভনে
কোনো কোনো প্রেম আছে প্রেমিককে খুনী হতে হয় ।

যদি কেউ ভালোবেসে খুনী হতে চান
তাই হয়ে যান
উৎকৃষ্ট সময় কিন্তু আজ বয়ে যায় ।

বাইরে থেকে দরোজা খুলতে খুলতে আমি এখন ক্লান্ত ।

আমি বলছি না ভালোবাসতেই হবে, আমি চাই
কেউ আমাকে খেতে দিক । আমি হাতপাখা নিয়ে
কাউকে আমার পাশে বসে থাকতে বলছি না,
আমি জানি, এই ইলেকট্রিকের যুগ
নারীকে মুক্তি দিয়েছে স্বামী -সেবার দায় থেকে ।
আমি চাই কেউ একজন জিজ্ঞেস করুক :
আমার জল লাগবে কি না, নুন লাগবে কি না,
পাটশাক ভাজার সঙ্গে আরও একটা
তেলে ভাজা শুকনো মরিচ লাগবে কি না ।
এঁটো বাসন, গেঞ্জি-রুমাল আমি নিজেই ধুতে পারি ।

আমি বলছি না ভলোবাসতেই হবে, আমি চাই
কেউ একজন ভিতর থেকে আমার ঘরের দরোজা

দীর্ঘ কিউতে নিজ স্থান

অনায়াসে সে ছেড়ে দেয় অচেনা কাউকে

তাঁর প্রয়োজন বেশি একথা ভেবে-

বড় ত্যাগে বড় বড় ইমারৎ ওঠে

হাসপাতাল-স্কুল-কলেজ-এতিমখানা

একটু জ্বলেই ফুরিয়ে যায়

কেউ তাকে মনেও রাখে না

না যে ছাড়ে, না যে পায়

তবুও অভ্যেসবশত ছোটো ছোটো ত্যাগ

বৃষ্টিতে ছাতা মেলে দেয় অন্যকে

আহার্যের ভাগ দেয় সহযাত্রীকে

কারো অসুবিধায় এগিয়ে যায় দু’পা

বড় ত্যাগ কখনো সখনো কেউ কেউ করে

মানুষের মতো মানুষ না হয়েও তা সে পারে

ছোটো ছোটো ত্যাগের লেখাজোকা নেই

প্রাত্যহিক জীবনের এইসব টুকরো টুকরো ত্যাগ

একজন মানুষকে সনাক্ত করে মানুষ বলে

সেই মানুষ হওয়া সত্যিই সহজ নয়।

ব্যস্ত সমাজের থেকে কবিতার নির্বাসন হয়ে গেছে কবে।

সফল ও সুখী মানুষেরা আজকাল কবিতার ধারও ধারে না,

তারা সকলেই সবকিছু বোঝে, বোঝে জীবনবীমার গল্প;

বোঝে হাসিখুশি, সুড়সুড়ি-মাখা, টিভি সিরিয়াল;

বোঝে ঝোপ বুঝে কোপ মারা, বোঝে হর্ষদ মেহেতা,

বোঝে কতখানি ধান থেকে জন্ম নেয় ঠিক কতখানি চাল,

শুধু কবিতা বোঝে না, বোঝে না যে তার জন্য

লজ্জা নেই কোনও,

সুপ্রাচীন সুতীব্র আর্তিতে ভরা মায়াবী শিল্পের দিক থেকে

সম্পূর্ণ ফিরিয়ে পিঠ বেশ আছে সুসভ্য প্রজাতি।

শুধু মাঝে মাঝে খুবই নির্জনে কোনও এক পবিত্র মুহূর্তে

প্রাণের ভিতর দিকে বেজে ওঠে বাশিঁ, অলৌকিক সেই বাশিঁ।

রন্ধনে ব্যসনে ব্যস্ত সুখী গৃহকোণ কেঁপে ওঠে,

বিস্মৃতা রাধার সমস্ত হৃদয় জুড়ে কোটালের বান ডাকে

উথাল পাথাল, খুব মাঝে মাঝে এরকম হয়, হয় নাকি?

ভুলে যাওয়া অতিপূর্ব প্রপিতামহের মতো রক্তের

ভিতরে ঢুকে পড়ে

কবিতার অসম্ভব বীজগুলি প্রতিশোধ নেয়।

সব কিছু সমস্ত অর্জন সুখ-স্বস্তি-স্বচ্ছলতা অর্থহীন মনে হয়।

বাশিঁ ডাকে, বাশিঁ বাজে, সেই বাশিঁ বাজে,

জীবন আচ্ছন্ন করা বাশিঁ বাজে যমুনা-পুলিনে।

একটা ঝিঁঝির ডাক যেই ওঠে সারা বন অন্ধকারে দুলতে থাকে

ছড়িয়ে পড়ে অরণ্যের ছায়া তারপর কাঁকরমাটির সবুজ

পাহাড় আঁকড়ে-ধরা শেকড়ের খবর আসে,

আমি তা বুকে চেপে রাখি। কেউ কি তা জানে?

কেই-বা জানে আমার রাজ্য-সমাচার?

অনেক গোপনতা ধরে রাখার ফন্দিও আমার অনেক,

যখন চুঁইয়ে চুঁইয়ে রক্ত পড়ছে শিরাতন্তু থেকে

আমি হোহো হাসিতে চমকে দিচ্ছি আকাশ,

UCB embarks on core banking profit

United Commercial Bank Ltd (UCB) continued to achieve significant growth in the 'core banking businesses' in the calendar year ended December 31, 2011.

The bank's profit from 'core banking' registered a 34 per cent rise during the period.

"Despite some odds in the internal and external economic areas, our bank has been able to achieve the growth due to efficient management and concerted efforts of our team members," M Shahjahan Bhuiyan, managing director of the bank told The Financial Express in an interview recently.

UCB achieved 23 per cent growth in advance in the year ended December 31, 2011 against the corresponding period of 2010. The growths in deposit and operating profits (unaudited) were 22 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

The bank earned Tk 6.6 billion as operating profit in 2011 while the advance and deposit were Tk 114.90 billion and Tk 137.80 billion respectively in the same period.

Commenting on the future outline of the bank, the UCB MD said the bank is going to complete the installation of core banking software (CBS) as soon as possible.

"It is impossible to survive in today's competitive market without CBS and that's why we have listed completion of CBS as one of the top priorities of 2012," Mr Shahjahan added.

He said coming out of 'early warning category' list of Bangladesh Bank, conservation of adequate capital under Basel-two, strengthening the capital-base, beginning the electronic fund under BEFTN, introduction of off-shore banking, adoptions of agriculture credit policy and green banking policy were the benchmark achievements of UCB in 2011.

Putting a thrust on 'organic growth', the UCB MD said dependence on highly sensitive corporate deposit should be reduced enhancing the retail deposit collection flow.

"With the opening up of economy and privatization in early 1983, UCB was one of the first generation private sector commercial banks, among handful of others that came into existence. The performance of UCB as a first generation bank, over the years, may be adjudged as praiseworthy in spite of the absence of adequate regulatory framework and suitable business model in the early days of privatization," Mr Bhuiyan said.

Mr Bhuiyan, one of the senior most banking professionals of the country said banking business of today has become more complex and is filled with uncertainties, changes and challenges due to newer dimension of national and global business and the economy at large.

"In order to deal with these complexities and challenges we need adequate preparedness. We are proud to say that UCB is successfully facing these challenges through capacity building at the group and individual level by development of skill, efficiency and up-gradation of performance ability in keeping up with the transformation in the banking industry."

"The New Management of the Bank having clear focus of the critical challenges that lies ahead has been continuously predicting the changes in the global as well as national economic cycles and making required adjustments in business strategies. Thus, a new success story was unfolded from July'2008 spearheaded by strong and effective leadership, direction and guidance of me," Mr Bhuiyan asserted.

There was slow growth of all business parameters up to the period of June, 2008 and then a sharp rise began in all business parameters from July, 2008 and beyond.

"Almost all the renowned business houses are now doing business with UCB which was possible due to our customer- friendly business policy and prompt decision making process. We have also developed business relationship with some renowned exchange houses abroad for increasing inward remittances," Mr Shahjahan said.

"In the perspective of Bangladesh, there is an immense opportunity of Off-Shore Banking for UCB with its proven capacity and capability in international trade," the UCB MD said.

Other than change in business performance, there were major changes in Bank's operation through introduction of new policies and amendment of existing policies.

"We have introduced policy and guidelines in every aspect of banking activities including initiatives to ensure sustainable and profitable business growth through development, acquisition and retention of potential human resources and high yielding customers by institutionalizing relationship banking across the Bank through building a team of dedicated, efficient and professional workforce; harnessing their core competence with good business practices, decipher market oscillations and exploit latent opportunities to remain ahead of others," he said.

"We do strongly believe that this miraculous success story has been possible because of our visionary business policy, all out drive by our executives and officers and relentless effort round the year and all these initiative we have taken will help us to be key market player towards making our dreams a reality," the UCB MD said.

চলো তাকে তুলে আনি, তবু বলো
আগে কেন আনি নাই ? অথচ স্বপ্নের মধ্যে
শিউলি-গাছের মতো আমার মা দারুন সুগন্ধ
সঙ্গে নিয়ে একনও দাঁড়িয়ে টান দেন কনিষ্ঠ আঙুল।
কপিকলে উঠে-আসা মধ্যাহ্নে কুয়োর ঠাণ্ডা পানি
আমাকে আবার তুলে দ্যায় নতুন শরীর ধরে
সেই সুপ্রাচীন সাঁওতাল। তার ছবি নেই কেন
এ্যালবামে ? সে কি শিমুলের মতো উড়ে
চলে গেছে শালবনে ? কণ্ঠ তার মহুয়ায়
মাদলের বোলে, জন্মে-জন্মে, অন্য কোনও জন্মান্তরে
জাগ্রত হবে না আর ? যদি হয়, আজ তাই

40 years of banking in Bangladesh

My interface with a commercial bank happened in 1973, while I needed a `demand draft' (DD) to apply for admission into a cadet college. It was the state-owned Sonali Bank in Sylhet. That time, the 'bank manager shaheb' or branch manager of any state-owned bank was a very respectable job. Then we all were introduced to Agrani Bank at Faujdarhat Cadet College in Chittagong where we tried to understand the term called 'clearing' or inter district payment through 'draft issuance'. That's all.

I became familiar with commercial banking, when I joined a first generation private commercial bank in 1984. That time banking was all about taking deposits and lending to businesses including state-owned enterprises. Banks' record keeping used to be done through large and fat ledger books.

All clients were at the receiving end- most of the time. They were eager to meet the branch managers to get things done early and without hassle. I moved to a foreign commercial bank early in 1987. Even there, level of automation was pretty low. Our clearing person used to count all his clearing claims without usage of a calculator even. And now? Except a few, all banks are automated with some of the banks being on latest service delivery platform and alternate distribution network. `Syndication', `club deals', `convertible bonds' or `securitization', these are nothing uncommon these days with more and more banks getting into `retail banking', `internet banking' and `investment banking' including `capital markets' opportunity spaces.

The banking industry in Bangladesh has flourished over last forty years, earning respectable amount of profits annually, sustaining growth and surviving cut-throat competition while providing attractive returns to shareholders.

However, news about bank directors' and chairmen's involvement in politics and underhand deals using banks' goodwill raise question about the banks' independence in running their operations. It also makes you think whether all the disclosures in the annual reports and other regulatory papers are only the glowing shell covering a huge hollow.

I, at times, question myself whether excessive regulation is the reason behind the veneer of goodness or whether there are other regulatory malpractices, disconnects or deficiencies that allow these banks to take advantage of the situation.

The image of the banking industry has many a times been tarnished by several media stories on the owners' irregular practices, operational lapses or credit failures. Despite the considerable progress made, global institutions are still somehow treating our banking industry activities with suspicion.

Countering the image issue is not the only block in the road to developing a respectable and successful institution, there are also the problems of 2Ps 3Cs and a T-- people, product, compliance and ethics, competition, change management and technology among others.

Though someone may differ, competition in Bangladesh seems to be the deadliest of all. It not only brings in positive developments but also encourages malpractice. There is competition not only from other banks but also from non-bank financial institutions (NBFI) and micro finance institutions (MFI).

Not only are the institutions competing, the regulators and customers are also pitting one against the other, making the situation extremely difficult, which gives you the feeling of being stuck between a rock and a hard wall. A customer will often try to make the best out of the situation by not complying with the regulatory requirement, referring to the service provided by a bank or banks.

The requirement of bankers to meet steep targets often results in succumbing to the demand from corporate houses, resulting in the bypassing of regulations. One act of bypassing results in another and then another. The breach of rules and regulations gives rise to malpractices, which often becomes the norm.

Competition in the banking industry is also emerging from the capital market end, as more and more corporate houses are going to the equity market to raise money. This not only hits the banks in the belly by affecting their core business but also indirectly affects their contribution to the market cap. More importantly, it forces them to risk their position by over-exposing themselves to volatile capital market through proprietary trading and position taking in order to maintain profitability.

All of us feel that the banking industry badly needs skilled human resources who will not only service old products but will also create and launch new innovative and forward looking products. Educating the market remains the first requirement towards creating new products and developing skilled human resources. Besides people and product issues, you need to be alive although to the ever-changing technology and regulatory requirements.

The new offering in the market which has got all banks running are the requirements of BASEL II & Automated Clearing House. The major challenge with change of regulation is that often the regulators are in a hurry to implement a sudden decision, rolling out action plans without proper research or understanding the broad implications and capabilities of the banks to comply with those.

The outcome is delay in implementation, confusion among stakeholders and new techniques to bypass these regulations. This, in turn, creates an uneven playing field for those who comply with the regulation versus those cleverly "managing" the situation without having to comply with. Too much noise and less action, at times, create doubt about the sincerity of the purpose.

As a law-abiding citizen you wonder why it is so easy to "manage" non-compliance? The final question remains -- who is losing out by this? Ultimately, every citizen of the country, as our country suffers.

Our new country started with a weak and shallow banking system in 1972 and that too with handful of state, owned banks. Now private sector banks- local and foreign call the shot, commanding majority of the market share. While letters of credit, cash credit and term loans were the asset products available, usage of ATM or credit card, mortgage loan or life style loans are increasing every day, with transaction banking, corporate advisory or capital markets services taking prominence. Banks are going `extra miles' for high net-worth and top tier clients.

However, we need to move further with emphasis on new product development in line with `M- commerce' and `E-commerce' opportunity spaces available, `Green Banking' and more importantly to serve the un-served clientele by expanding the banking services and customize product offering according to the target market. Increasing number of Bangladesh business houses are going cross-border with their need increasing for `world class' as well as cross-border banking services. The `regulatory' agency is also running out of tools and capacity to manage, guide and help the expanding banking world. Future is going to be much more competitive, yet great fun too, provided we play the game well and in togetherness. (Mamun Rashid is a banker and economic analyst.

Corporate governance key to attracting foreign investors

Bangladesh today is the 70th largest exporter and the 3rd largest RMG exporter in the world, boasting the 21st fastest growing economy. The world's two top credit rating agencies, Standard and Poors (S&P) and Moody's Investor Service, for the first time, assigned sovereign credit ratings to Bangladesh. S&P assigned BB- and Moody's Investors Service assigned Ba3 to Bangladesh and termed the macroeconomic outlook of the country 'stable', putting Bangladesh at par with Philippines, Vietnam and Turkey. In the South Asian context, Bangladesh is positioned higher than Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Several global financial institutions have identified Bangladesh as one of the potential economies of the world. Leading US investment bank Goldman Sachs has included Bangladesh as one of the rising economies of the world, the so-called Next 11 (N11), after the BRIC nations of Brazil, Russia, India and China. Similarly, JP Morgan, another global leader in investment banking, has included Bangladesh in its 'JP Morgan Frontier Five'. And, in their 2006 report on “The World in 2050”, Price Waterhouse Coopers extended their analysis to include 13 other emerging economies including Bangladesh in their new 'PWC 30 list' as one of the long-term potential growth economies by 2050.

While these are all extremely positive for Bangladesh, the big question now is what will ensure that this growth trajectory remains consistent and ensures that Bangladesh becomes a middle income country by 2030?

Sustained long-term economic growth is fuelled mainly by investments, employment and technology and good corporate governance is the sustainability factor that will ensure the consistency of this growth. A good corporate governance framework is one that is accountable, fair, transparent and responsible. These ensure strategic guidance of the company, the effective monitoring of management by the board, and the board's accountability, and protect shareholder rights, treat all shareholders, including minority shareholders, equitably and provide effective redress for violations.

Transparency provides timely and accurate disclosure of all material matters of the corporation including financial situation, performance, ownership and governance.

Being responsible recognises legal rights of shareholders and encourages active co-operation corporations and shareholders in creating wealth, jobs, and the sustainability of financially sound enterprises.

The good news is that the public and private sectors in Bangladesh have taken steps to improve corporate governance in recent years. The Securities and Exchange Commission issued guidelines on corporate governance in 2006 and the creation of a Central Depository has made share ownership and transfers more secure. International standards for accounting and auditing have been partially incorporated into local standards and the development of the accounting and auditing profession has been assisted by a wide-ranging donor-supported programmes. Bangladesh Enterprise Institute, Institute of Governance Studies, Bangladesh Bank Training Academy and, more recently, Bangladesh Institute of Capital Market have championed corporate governance efforts in Bangladesh.

However, obstacles remain. In spite of the above achievements, the basic legal framework for corporate governance in Bangladesh is dated, and there are a number of contradictions and points of confusion between the various rules and regulations that apply to listed companies. Building on current efforts, more needs to be done to raise the quality of accounting and auditing. Greater independence and professionalism is required in the boardrooms of both listed companies and state-owned enterprises and, neither the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies nor the courts are particularly effective at enforcing the Companies Act.

Understandably, one question may come up: why would corporate governance be of benefit to Bangladeshi companies? The reasons are simple:

Corporate governance improves shareholder value and competitiveness by

Optimising operational and financial efficiency: Good corporate governance streamlines business processes, leading to better operating performance and lower capital expenditures (Gompers, Ishii and Metrick, Corporate Governance and Equity Prices, August 2001), improves the company's return on capital employed (ROCE) and ensures better share price performance, higher profitability, larger dividend payouts and lower risk levels than peers (Lawrence Brown, Georgia State University, Sept. 2003)

Improving access to outside capital: Global institutional investors managing more than 1 trillion of assets state that they will pay a premium for well governed companies. Premiums average 30 percent in Eastern Europe and Africa and 22 percent in Asia and Latin America (McKinsey Global Investor Opinion Survey on corporate governance, 2002).

Escalating valuation and lowering the cost of capital: Over 10 years, well-governed companies across a wide range of sectors have seen superior valuation multiples of more than 8 percent over their badly governed peers (Metrick, Ishii and Gompers, Corporate Governance and Equity Prices, August 2001).

One standard-deviation improvement in governance brings an improvement in valuation multiples that ranges from 18 percent for companies in major OECD markets to 33 percent in emerging markets (Clapper and Love, World Bank, 2002)

Builds/improves the company's reputation and trust: Corporate governance can make or break reputations by creating confidence, establishing goodwill and building/restoring investor trust.

Naturally, there is the issue of cost. Good governance entails real costs. Some of the costs include hiring dedicated staff such as corporate secretaries, experienced and independent directors, or other governance specialists. It will likely require the payment of fees to external counsel, auditors, and consultants. The costs of additional disclosure can be significant as well. Furthermore, it requires considerable managerial and supervisory board time, especially in the start-up phase. These costs tend to make implementation considerably easier for larger companies that may have the resources to spare than smaller companies whose resources may be stretched quite thin.

A company will not always see instant improvements to its performance due to better corporate governance practices. However, returns generally exceed the costs. This is especially true when one takes into account that without good corporate governance too much power is centred on one individual without proper oversight, and one enters markets that one does not understand and fails to properly set strategy and manage risks.

In absence of good corporate governance, board fails to ensure controls, poor disclosure and transparency becomes commonplace, and shareholder rights are mistreated.

In extreme cases, systemic governance problems may even undermine faith in the financial markets and threaten market stability.

Building on the existing efforts mentioned earlier, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank Group has recently initiated a comprehensive corporate governance advisory project -- Bangladesh Corporate Governance Project (BCGP) -- which aims to improve financial performance and operational efficiency by promoting better corporate governance practices among business enterprises in Bangladesh. This project is jointly funded by the Netherlands and SEDF (SouthAsia Enterprise Development Facility, a multi-donor facility funded by IFC, DFID, NORAD and managed by IFC).

The BCGP will work with various stakeholders (e.g., regulators, financial institutions, family-owned businesses, business associations, chambers of commerce etc.) to (i) improve corporate governance codes at the country level, (ii) raise awareness on corporate governance and its best practices (iii) develop a pool of trainers to help codify corporate governance principles in the market and also (iv) work with business enterprises on a one-one-one basis to improve their corporate governance practices. In addition, to sustain the advancement of corporate governance practices and to effect positive change in the market in the long run, the BCGP will aim to build/enhance the capacity of key corporate governance service providers (training and research institutes, consulting firms etc.), press and universities in Bangladesh.

In conclusion, it must be noted that corporate governance is not a one-off exercise but rather an ongoing process. No matter how many corporate governance structures and processes the company has in place, it is advisable to regularly update and review them. Markets tend to value long-term true commitment to good governance practice and not a single action or box-ticking exercise.

E-banking rides high on IT

The financial sector made remarkable progress in adopting electronic forms of payments instead of traditional paper-based ones in the just concluded year.

The use of debit card, credit card, automated teller machine (ATM), internet banking, mobile banking, automated cheque processing and credit information system increased significantly in 2011.

Banks were in the forefront of harnessing technology to improve their products, services and efficiency to rope in customers.

According to Bangladesh Bank (BB) data, out of 47 scheduled banks 43 are now engaged more or less in electronic operations.

The four banks that are yet to adopt electronic banking are: Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Bangladesh Development Bank, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank and Rupali Bank. All these are state-owned.

BB data shows 38 banks were providing online banking facilities and 18 banks internet banking. On the other hand, nearly 40 banks have now ATM or debit card services and 26 banks offer credit card facilities.

Transactions through ATMs increased by more than 50 percent to around Tk 35,000 crore in 2011. Credit card transactions also rose more than 50 percent to nearly Tk 5,000 crore.

The central bank also took steps to make automated cheque processing system and mobile banking more effective. The BB issued guidelines for mobile-based banking services in the same year in a bid to ensure financial inclusion of the non-banked population.

“It (2011) was a great year for the financial sector in terms of IT adoption,” said Tapan Kanti Sarker, head of IT of NCC Bank.

Cheque processing, credit information and fund transfer all have been automated in the just concluded year, he added.

Syed Masodul Bari, head of IT of Al-Arafah Bank, said banking has become much easier due to the use of IT in 2011. He cited an example of remittance transfer, which has now become a matter of a few minutes instead of weeks needed earlier.

He said mobile banking would rise with a huge potential in 2012.

“Banks' activities have become more transparent due to the use of IT,” said Bari.

চলতি বছর সার্নের বিজ্ঞানীদের ‘হিগস বোসন’ শনাক্ত করা নিয়ে বিজ্ঞান বিশ্বে তৈরি হয়েছে তুমুল উত্তেজনা। বলা হচ্ছে, হিগস বোসন শনাক্ত হলে সমাধান হবে বস্তুর ‘ভর’ রহস্যের।

বিজ্ঞান বিশ্বের এই উত্তেজনার সাথে আমাদের ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের এক গৌরবময় অধ্যায় জড়িত। ‘বোসন’ নামটি এসেছে এ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়েরই এক সময়ের অধ্যাপক সত্যেন্দ্রনাথ বসুর নাম থেকে।

তিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রতিষ্ঠার লগ্ন ১৯২১ সাল থেকে ১৯৪৫ সাল পর্যন্ত অধ্যাপনাসূত্রে পদার্থবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের সাথে জড়িত ছিলেন।

ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অধ্যাপক থাকা অবস্থায় তার এক গবেষণারসূত্র ধরে পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে পরিসংখ্যান বলবিদ্যার সূচনা হয়। পদার্থবিদ্যায় বসু প্রবর্তিত পরিসংখ্যানের নাম তাই ‘বসু পরিসংখ্যান’।

এই পরিসংখ্যান নিয়ে কাজ করে জগৎ বিখ্যাত পদার্থ বিজ্ঞানী আইনস্টাইন একক পরমাণুযুক্ত গ্যাসের একটি নতুন সংখ্যাতত্ত্ব প্রকাশ করেন, যার নাম দেওয়া হয় ‘বোস-আইনস্টাইন সংখ্যায়ন’। যে সব মৌলিক কণা তথা প্রাথমিক কণার ক্ষেত্রে এই সংখ্যায়ন কাজ করে তাদেরকে বোসন বলে।

ইলেকট্রন, প্রোটন, নিউট্রন ইত্যাদি কণাকে বলে প্রাথমিক কণা। আমাদের বিশ্বের সমস্ত প্রাথমিক কণাকে এদের বৈশিষ্ট্যের ভিত্তিতে দুটি দলে ভাগ করা হয়। একটি ভাগকে বলা হয় বোসন ও অপর ভাগকে বলা হয় ফার্মিয়ন।

বাঙালি বিজ্ঞানী সত্যেন্দ্রনাথ বসুর নামে হয় ‘বোসন’ আর ইটালির বিজ্ঞানী এনরিকো ফার্মির নামে ‘ফার্মিয়ন’।

সত্যেন্দ্রনাথ বসু ১৮৯৪ সালের ১ জানুয়ারি কলকাতায় জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। রোববার এই মহান বাঙালি পদার্থবিজ্ঞানীর ১১৭তম জন্মবার্ষিকী।

সুরেশচন্দ্র বসু ও আমোদিনী দেবির সন্তান সত্যেন্দ্রনাথ। তার বিজ্ঞানানুরাগী পিতার কেমিক্যাল ওয়ার্কশপের ব্যবসা ছিলো।

পাঁচ বছর বয়সেই স্কুলে ভর্তি হন সত্যেন বোস। প্রথম স্কুলের নাম ছিল ‘নিউ ইন্ডিয়া স্কুল’। পরবর্তীতে হিন্দু স্কুল থেকে প্রবেশিকা পরীক্ষায় পাস করেন। প্রবেশিকায় সারা বাংলায় তিনিই প্রথম হন। দ্বিতীয় হন ঢাকার ছেলে আরেক বিখ্যাত বিজ্ঞানী মেঘনাদ সাহা।

এরপর তিনি ভর্তি হন কোলকাতার প্রেসিডেন্সি কলেজে। সেখান থেকে পাস করে ভর্তি হন কোলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে। সেখানে তার সহপাঠীদের মধ্যে ছিলেন মেঘনাদ সাহা, জ্ঞানচন্দ্র ঘোষ, জ্ঞানেন্দ্রনাথ মুখোপাধ্যায় প্রমুখ বিদ্বৎজন।

তার শিক্ষকদের মধ্যে ছিলেন বাংলার আরো দুই বিখ্যাত বিজ্ঞানী স্যার জগদীশ চন্দ্র বসু ও আচার্য প্রফুল্লচন্দ্র রায়। এদের অনুপ্রেরণা সারা জীবন তাকে চালিয়েছে।

কি স্কুল কি কলেজ-বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, সব জায়গাতেই তিনি পরীক্ষায় প্রথম হয়েছেন। কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বিজ্ঞান কলেজ চালু হলে তাতে যোগ দেওয়া প্রথম শিক্ষকদের মধ্যে অন্যতম সত্যেন বোস ।

পরে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় স্থাপিত হলে তিনি এখানে যোগ দেন। আর তার সব মহান আবিষ্কার ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অধ্যাপনা করার সময়েরই ঘটনা। তার কাছে আইনস্টাইনের নিজ হাতে লেখা দুটি চিঠি এখন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পদার্থবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের গর্বের ধন।

তিনি ছিলেন অসাধারণ শিক্ষক। ছাত্রদের পড়াতে যেয়েই তিনি কোয়ন্টাম পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের জনক ম্যাক্স প্লাঙ্কের সূত্রের অসঙ্গতি টের পান। আর এ নিয়ে তাঁর গবেষণার ফলই ‘বসু পরিসংখ্যান’।

দেশবিভাগের প্রাক্কালে তিনি ঢাকা ত্যাগ করেন। যোগ দেন কোলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বিজ্ঞান কলেজে। সেখানে ১৯৫৬ সাল পর্যন্ত অধ্যাপক হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।

এরপর বিশ্বভারতীর উপাচার্য ছিলেন দুইবছর। তারপর অবসর নেন।

রবীন্দ্রনাথ তাঁর ‘বিশ্ব পরিচয়’ বইটি সত্যেন্দ্রনাথকে উৎসর্গ করেন। ভারত সরকার ‘পদ্মবিভূষণ’ খেতাব দিয়ে তাঁকে সম্মানিত করে।

আজীবন মাতৃভাষায় বিজ্ঞানচর্চা প্রসারের জন্য কাজ করে গেছেন তিনি। বাংলা ও বাংলাভাষার প্রতি তার ছিলো অগাধ
ভালবাসা।

১৯৭৪ সালের ৪ ফেব্র“য়ারি কোলকাতায় নিজ বাসভবনে তিনি দেহত্যাগ করেন।

বাংলাভাষায় বিজ্ঞান চর্চার সমর্থনে তাঁর অমর বাণী, “যিনি বলেন বাংলায় বিজ্ঞান চর্চা সম্ভব নয়, তিনি হয় বিজ্ঞান বোঝেন না অথবা বাংলা জানেন না।”
